• Mi’kmaq artists were famous for their porcupine quillwork. Some colonists even called the Mi’kmaq “Porcupine Indians” because the Mi’kmaq were so
skilled at this art. The Mi’kmaq also did intricate beadwork and basket weaving. The Mi’kmaq are still well known for these arts. The Mi’kmaq also
crafted “wampum” out of white and purple shell beads. Wampum were traded as a kind of currency, but they were more culturally important as an art
material. The designs and pictures on wampum belts often told a story or represented a person’s family.
