  • Today is Indigenous Veteran's Day. Today is an opportunity to recognize the military service and sacrifices made by First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples. This day of acknowledgement was established in 1994. It was not until 1995, fifty years after the Second World War, that Indigenous Peoples were allowed to lay Remembrance Day wreaths at the National War Memorial to remember and honor our fallen Indigenous Veterans. Indigenous people, on a per capita basis, were the nationality with the highest percentage of volunteers for WW1, WW2, and the Korean war. During WW1, more than half of the eligible Indigenous people volunteered to serve in the Canadian Armed Forces. Our Indigenous veterans served in the military alongside all Canadians but Canada did not treat them the same as other Veterans after they returned to civilian life. Often Indigenous Veterans were denied access to full Veteran benefits and support programs. Indigenous military members left a remarkable record of wartime accomplishment. Several were commissioned as officers, and many served as battle-hardened platoon leaders and combat instructors. At least 50 were decorated for bravery on the battlefield. People ask why did Indigenous people volunteer when they were treated so horribly and to an Indigenous person, the answer is simple: It is simply who they are. We view life in that we are all connected. We are all related. The responsibility of life falls on all of us and we all must work together for the greater good for all. Today, we have Indigenous service members in all areas of the military, serving with distinction. On Indigenous Veteran's Day, we must make the commitment to remember and to never forget the sacrifices made by our Indigenous Veterans.
