  • Soyal is the winter solstice ceremony of the Zuni and Hopi people held on December 22nd. The main goal is to awaken the sun from its long winter slumber ritually. It is a time for purification and the start of a new cycle of the Wheel of the Year. It is a significant celebration for the Hopi people, lasting 16 days, beginning with prayers and supplications, and concluding with a feast and a Kachina dance. During this time, children receive Kachina dolls, learn life lessons and elders pass down stories to the next generation.
